In the past I have released some of my old projects as open source, but I haven't done much development on existing open source projects. Last week I decided to try this by fixing one of the bugs tagged as "easy" on the Python bug tracker. These are issues that the core developers feel can be fixed in a relatively short amount of time. On December 4th, I submitted my patch for issue #13464 and on December 6th it was merged in to the development branch that will become Python 3.3.

It was fun, I think may try to contribute more patches to open source projects in the future.

If when you read the title you said to yourself "sure you did" you are probably not alone. In fact I would probably have the same reaction myself reading the headline. I can remember when I first was learning to program I would occasionally want to blame problems I was having with my code on one of the tools or libraries I was using. I think this is an experience many people have when they start out, and then you quickly learn to blame yourself for problems. The question "Why isn't the computer do what I want it to?" is almost always "Because it is doing what I am telling it to do."
